Monday

For the first day of our Holiday in Cairns we thought we would get the adrenaline flowing by going white water rafting on the Tully River. It’s a big day activity, they collected us from our backpackers at 6.45am and we didn’t get dropped off until about 6.00pm. They split you into 6 man rafts for the descent of the river. Today we decided to have a bit of a day off. So the family went their own way.

On Wednesday we finally got to go to the Great Barrier Reef. We went to the reef with Sunlover Cruises. They have a platform permanently anchored at the outer reef. The snorkelling was incredible with literally 100′s of fish of all colours swimming with you. The coral was fantastic and was so close you could even touch it.

That night we went to the Reef Casino, a good night was had by all, especially Bob who won a thousand dollars playing blackjack

Thursday

On Thursday we visited Kuranda. It is a quiet little village in the rainforest behind Cairns. You can get a bus there, but we went on the Skyrail. It took about an hour with 2 stops on the route. Kuranda’s a cute place but a little too tacky for my liking. Every second shop is selling didgeridoo’s and the ones next door are selling Aboriginal Art. A must see is the Kuranda Heritage Markets, with more Tshirts for sale as well as lots of local handmade arts and crafts, as well as more Tshirts. On Sunday we took a tour to Cape Tribulation and the Daintree Rainforest . The Daintree is the worlds oldest rainforest, and it’s pretty special. They say it’s “where the rainforest meets the reef” and thats about it. The rainforest runs right down to the palm fringed beaches.
