Savannah Way:
This one’s for the real travellers amongst you, so if you’re landing at Cairns Airport then you should definitely think about this one! Running from Cairns in North Queensland to Broome in Western Australia, it takes in a myriad of of spectacular national parks and a number of world heritage sights, not to mention the world’s biggest lava tubes . You’ll pass through ancient indigenous settlements, old gold mining villages and outback cattle ranches as you travel across the country.
Explorer’s Way:
This drive is perfect if you’re touching down at Adelaide Airport in the South or Darwin Airport in the North. Running between the two cities, the Explorer’s highway slices right through the middle of Australia, taking in a colourful variety of environments. You’ll meander through the rolling green hills of Adelaide, the wine regions of South Australia and the stark red sands of the Simpson Desert, before finishing at the tip of the Northern Territory, where the dark green tropical forests of Darwin provide an impressive finish to your journey.
Adelaide to Melbourne Road:
This scenic drive is perfect if you’re landing at either Adelaide Airport or Melbourne Airport. Starting in the rolling green hills of Adelaide, this drive wanders through the beautiful Murraylands, the Coonawara wine region, the Grampians and finally Melbourne. You’ll pass through the B&B region and the historic goldfields on your way through to Melbourne, and you can top off your adventure by enjoying the trendy atmosphere of the Victorian capital.
Mereenie Trail:
For a true outback experience, drive Northern Territory’s Mereenie Loop Trail. The road links Alice Springs, the heart of Australia’s red centre, with the remote desert localities of Glen Helen, Kings Canyon and Uluru. The route through this barren landscape covers roughly 700 miles and should be experienced over three to five days to explore the many walking trails, sightseeing trips, impressive gorges and picture perfect swimming holes.
